Is there any volunteer work where you are? Do any of the churches or lodges ever have potluck dinners? Do you have the energy to put together a neighborhood pitch in? Have you checked out meetup.com and seen if there are any groups in your area you'd be interested in? If you like to throw darts or play pool almost every town has leagues at the local bars.

As far as making friends it's a plus if you are outgoing I've also found listening is one of the best skills you can have. A good friend of mine I met in a line at a grocery store. I commented on a book she was buying and we started talking and ten years later still friends lol. Good luck to you.
