I am 45, married and given birth and I still cannot use tampons. If they are hurting or uncomfortable then I would give up on them. I finally talked to my doctor about my issue and it turns out that my uterus is tilted in a way that make it press on my vagina giving me difficulties.

With toys, fingers, tampons etc lube is very good to use.
