When you first meet with a psychiatrist he or she will ask about your symptoms, medications, family and medical history, education and employment, living situation, relationships etc... They also note your behavior, dress and speech. Some will make a diagnosis at the end of the first appointment and may prescribe medication or make adjustments.
Seeing a psychiatrist might help you a lot more than a GP who is not trained to diagnose and treat mental illness. I definitely got answers and much better results with my psychiatrist.
