It does seem like the permanent disappointment cuts to the core.
And in this case, it's a display of favoritism, in a way.
There's family updates, when grown and gone. Then there's analyzing the whole person, warts and all. There's other avenues of getting support with children, young and older. I was raised in a culture of updates(health, travel, jobs, etc updates), yet, witnessed in an extended way, how expression of overall disappointment in a siblings character to the other sibling(s) can destroy family relationships. When it's by a parent, it's devastating, imo.
