You're not missing out on much Readytostop, despite rumors from the South to the contrary.

It's green, finger sized or larger, shaped a bit like a pickle or jalapeno. Used in stews like gumbo, or served fried or sometimes roasted or pickled.

An acquired taste I'd say, and requires careful prep as it's prone to being slimy when not cooked properly.

Tastes to me, usually like.... cucumber/spinach, with a hint of green pepper?

Of course, I'm sure one of the aforementioned fans will jump in w/an ode to okra now so you can consider both sides lol.
