I'm so glad Hector's family was able and willing to listen to him when he said he was not ready to end his life.
Reading the stories of what these dogs went on to do after being rescued is incredible. Hector is not the only therapy dog. Another belongs to a reading program in libraries where kids who have difficulty reading read to the dogs. Another is a top agility dog. Others are "just" family pets.
Of the 50+ dogs rescued from Vick's farm only two had to be put down. One was a male who had fought so much he could not be rehabilitated. The other was a female who had been bred so many times her health was ruined.
Pit Bulls have such a bad rap with people. Don't get me wrong. There are some very bad ones out there. I was attacked by one myself many years ago. But they can also be sweet loving dogs.
