sure. freud (and klein i think) thought that agression was a biological drive and couldn't be explained by reference to other psychological states (like frustration of libidinal urges).

but kohut thought that things bottom out at fragmentation / annihilation. what is "hurt" supposed to be? well, anger is thought to be a defence against that / against frustration of libidinal urges (e.g., being left to die)
