6 beds. Yikes. Some of the UK hospitals I've seen on TV have large wards lined with beds that are only separated by curtains. It would be horrible staying in one of those. I don't know how people would be able to sleep in that environment.

Four beds is the max here in Ontario, Canada. I've been in rooms like that and hate them. There is barely any privacy. It is quite common to hear confidential conversations. These rooms are noisy at night, especially on a medical or surgical unit. Staff constantly enter the room and IV pump alarms seem to go off more at night.

Ward rooms are an infection control nightmare.

I've always preferred semi-private rooms, because they were big and it was nice to have a roommate. Since I don't have additional insurance I rarely get these rooms. We have universal healthcare here that only covers ward room rates, unless the hospital doesn't have any available.
