Perhaps addressing the sleep aspect of the problem might help. I'm thinking advice or treatment offered to people with " night terrors" could be of value.

I have had ONE experience with night terrors and I do not ever, ever want to experience it again. It was astoundingly real to me.
OP, is this something that might be possible?
