It might help if think of the body as an incredible machine, the most complex, wondrous machine ever built. The systems that keep us alive complete a phenomenal number of tasks to keep us going. We are the most adaptable mammal the world has ever know.
I believe our bodies evolved for the sole purpose of housing our minds, the spark that makes us who we are. Try not to think of how easily we are damaged but instead how amazingly strong we really are.
One thing about the universe is everything is always changing, becoming new reborn again as a different form of energy. Why would people be any different? Everything must break down in order for it's energy to be used elsewhere. I am not religious by any means so I look at the scientific principle that states "energy can be neither created nor destroyed, only transformed into another state".
I cannot say your last statement is wrong. Just the opposite. The medical community has a lot to learn about death and the disgraceful way that many people are forced to die. So right out an advanced directive, living will, or whatever you may call it to ensure you are allowed to die on your terms.
I have made all precautions to ensure I am allowed to die at home, where I can be near my wife and my own couch and I will have peace and quiet. Also for as long as is possible I will be able to access this website and one other.
