I saw a saying today, that said, it's ok to say no, without explaining. I feel that was once my mindset. I couldn't give simple direct answers, felt it necessary to go into lengthy explanations.
A lot does stem from neglect in my childhood. Some stems from various personalities of influence, where I felt unheard and often.
