I would suggest reading from this site sections on depression as a start. Also, read up on what meds your boyfriend is on.

Biggest thing to know - he can't just snap out of it... so trying to get a smile out of him my not be the best thing right now - doesn't mean you can't tell joke - just keep in mind getting him to smile is not always a good indicator of what is going on inside...
