It's hard to accept that people aren't always going to do what you want. You can either make a big dramatic deal out of it, or you can let it go. We can control whether we smile, or how we think about someone else's smile, but we have no control-- nor should we-- over whether someone else chooses to smile or not. We don't even know what the smile means, or what its absence means.

I do have a hard time getting behind the idea that this proffered response is some kind of brilliance. It just sounds immature to me, and kind of mean. It wouldn't be the way that I would expect someone who cared about me to treat me.
