They numb the area with a xylocaine (sp?) shot. Then they insert a very tiny needle into the nodule and aspirate some tissue. There are multiple aspirations to make sure they get enough tissue to be a viable biopsy.
It's not very comfortable, but it's not the most painful thing either. PM me and I can give you more details.
