To simply remember a face does not mean that the face was cute to them - the face might have been interesting and thus memorable, which is not exactly the same as cute; and/or, he simply might have a very good memory in the department of human faces.
So by itself, it is a fairly neutral fact.
However, HOW he remembered you is quite endearing. I think he was happy to see you at his new place of work and I think he likes you well enough. Since he is shy, your plan to approach him slowly is good - you won't scare him off.
Something yummy might come out of this...
