I am not saying do both. I am saying do everything possible to prevent it. It is usually much easier to prevent that to come out of once in it. If you are deep in it do whatever you can to come out of it.
If you find that no matter what you do you still fall into it and then no matter what you do it remains then you may not have a choice but to ride it out. After many years of many depressive episodes I have found that to be true for me. Doesn't mean it is true for you. Often when it is moderate things I do make a difference and will snap me out of it. Even in the deepest of depressions when I kind of know it has to run its course I will still make appointments with my psychiatrist and therapist and keep attempting to do what I can even with no hope it will make any difference. Its kind of a paradox of acceptance yet willingness.
