I was misdiagnosed with BPD. So many psychiatrists had trouble with that diagnosis and so did my family. It made no sense to me because it failed to describe my feelings and personality. All it did was describe an adverse reaction to an SSRI. The suicidal thoughts and behaviors stopped when I quit taking the drug. I got a proper diagnosis out in the community by a talented psychiatrist who observed and listened.

I've heard of people doing inpatient psychiatric assessments. They are usually ordered by the court or are done if major mental illness such as schizophrenia is suspected.
Most people undergo assessments as an outpatient.

The correct diagnosis should make a big difference in treatment.
