I'm thinking the way you would do that is go to the sounds on your computer and select mute for the chat. At least that is how it seems to work for me on Windows 7. I didn't really think about doing that beforehand but it doesn't really matter because the sound was still bad and needed to be removed. I no longer feel like I have to mute the chat now.

Edit: no that just mutes my entire internet. Whatever.
