I also need sleep even as hypomanic. When I can't sleep a full 7 or 8 hours, that's when I notice the hypo coming on much easier though, say with a stress trigger. I was wondering the same thing because I'm a true insomniac year-round. Someone once told me that you don't have to check all the items off to be bipolar. What I realized is usually I need my sleep even as hypo, but I will forget to eat or eat way less and not feel the need to eat. On the down phase, I seem to make up the calories because my weight is stable (fluctuates only within a few pounds).
