I'm fairly new in town and haven't found a hair place worth going back to twice, so last time I needed a haircut, I went to Fantastic Sam's, one of those chain places. I figured, how bad could it be?
Well, it was so bad that I had to go pay MORE money to have it fixed by a competent hairdresser. Which also made it very, very short. She said I didn't have any two places on my head that were the same length! All I asked for was to layer it up and cut the bangs. One side ended up two inches longer than the other! What a nightmare. I had big chunks cut out of mine too, so I feel your pain.
It's almost enough to make me want to let it grow! Does anybody know if hairdressers are regulated or something and you can check their licenses, like doctors?

God I would love to go somewhere like boys can and get a slip slop slap cut for like $10!
Unfortunately, the more expensive places do not always guarantee a good cut either. There are no indicators except for others' experiences, I now believe!
I was lucky enough to have my colleague come in to work going 'this is the best cut and colour I have ever had', and Servilles is five mins walk away from work, and they could fit me in after work late night thursday.
and guess what!!!! even if i just let it dry naturally, she has cut it so it falls pretty much as it did when i left the salon. AMAZING. this never happens to me ... i shall embrace it ...!!!!!!
jess - sounds like a mad ripoff, grrrrrrrr :|
