hi Withit,
I have sleep issues also, and one thing I learned from my therapist was that 'Questions' are like search engines for the brain.

When I listened closely to my thoughts, as I would settle in bed I was asking lots of questions which would keep my brain racing for answers.

I agree to shut off the news/computer/tv for a good period of time, and I started by telling myself statements when I was aware of it. it's hard to stay in the present moment ('I'm not going to think about that, I need some sleep'), but it has helped alot to fall asleep and stay asleep.
