Regardless of what buttons they push, YOU are responsible for your response and your actions. Your response certainly seems over the top and a result of mental illness rather than a response to what sounds like a pretty normal issue that might be expected to cause some frustration.

This does sound frustrating. If you have already discussed this, it is disrepectful and rude for your husband to go out and buy the item anyway. However, unless your kids are over 18, no way in hell is it in any way their responsibility. They are CHILDREN. Children push buttons and limits. It is what they do. It is your job as a parent to mantain a grip on yourself, your emotions and responses. If you cannot do so, you need to remove yourself from the situation.

You need to get away for a while to insure the safety of your family. You have no right to endanger them this way. There is no death penalty for your entire family just because your husband did something a little bit rude and disrespectful.
