Either/or. I learned how to be very good at small talk, so I don't have much problem with it. I get more uncomfortable if conversations get to be more about me and not as superficial (I've got a lot of superficial bits about myself that I'm fine talking about). This never happens until after I've known someone for quite a while.
Group interactions are hit and miss. Sometimes I like it because I feel like no one is pressured into talking to me. But sometimes I end up not really socializing much, and then I feel like people will be judging that. haha.
