Good question. My son has definitely not disowned me, but I think now he is maintaining a healthy distance (my counselor said we were co-dependent!). That's important since he has his own wife and home now.

I can tell you that I stayed away from my mother (who had an untreated mental illness) because it was just so horribly painful to be around her. She (apparently) could not see her own illness and (apparently) could not control her abusive behavior towards me, so in order to save myself I stayed away.
