I think it is entirely possible to have a deep and abiding unconditional love for your pet. I also believe the love a person feels for the pet, while it can be just as strong, is a different type of love. If you think that your lady friend is criticizing you and talking back then maybe she is not the right woman or it is your personality problems in action. It's probably not the girlfriend.
