Since your Dr. is an endocrinologist, does that mean that your hypothyroidism is under control? You probably know, but if it's not under control, that can cause depression. If you are taking thyroid supplements, be sure to follow the directions exactly and take them every single day with no exceptions.

Second of all, I would suggest a couple of things. Look up the drug on the internet.

Imipramine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Note the severe side effects and the LIFE-THREATENING side effects in bold. Note that this is a very early antidepressant drug that was mostly used before the advent of SSRIs (which also don't work well).

Also, since you have doubts, maybe it's worth it to get a second opinion from a professional.

Notice that I think it's a terrible idea to start taking antidepressants before trying healthy safe ways of resolving a depression unless you are in a really desperate state.
