I think you have to really deep down want to be sober. You have to do it for yourself and not the court or spouse or kids or whatever and you have to really surrender to the fact it is more powerful than you. Those are the first steps. Then follow all the suggestions that have gotten people lasting sobriety.

I know a guy who relapsed hard every year for like ten years straight. Today he has 15 years. I always saw him working very hard so I didn't understand it. I need to ask him if he knows why. Never never give up. I have twenty years now. The last five years of using was heavy meth. That got ugly.

And I should say I went to my first AA meeting years before I got sober. I would go to meetings and get a six pack on the way home. I knew I needed help but wasn't quite ready yet.
