If you don't want drugs for now (because of any reason), I still would suggest you to see a therapist about it. Maybe he/she can help you in an other way.
I have no history with sleeping meds, but if I smell lavender before I go to sleep (even to bath with), my night is different and calmer. Also I write to my diary at the evening, so it helps to put out whatever is on my mind and not "to take it" to sleep.
As I see it, not to take meds is okay for a while, but if this has an effect on your everydays and no other method is working, I would still consider it.
