I have been in several different hospitals several different times and I have seen patients forced to take medications, not very often, but it has happened. Maybe this is something they tell people to get them to go to the groups, but I didn't want to take the chance of insurance not paying because treatment is so expensive. I'm not saying my experiences were horrible, but I have seen these things.
Our hospital doesn't require groups (unless you are there for detox). On the psych unit we strongly encourage patients to attend group. And tell them it could speed up the discharge process if they participate in treatment. However, we don't keep patients longer than needed and require it.

On detox our unit is strictly voluntary. If a person is not participating in treatment then they are discharged (with the rare exception of course)
