I've found out because I saw the cuts on my friends wrist. he's a cynical and rather sad guy, so I guess those count as red flags. I've noticed he occasionally brings up wishing he was dead too. That's one to look out for. I watch him closely now, and he knows it. He's tried hiding them better but I still check up on him.
