Good song by Nirvana...NO actually a very good med. Lithium is a naturally occuring salt that has mood stabilizing, anti-depressant effects, and the only drug proven to reduce suicidal thinking. It has also been shown to stimulate certain chemicals in the brain that help regrow brain matter. It can be dangerous, and needs close monitoring by a medical psychologist or a psychiatrist (maybe psych NP), but not just your PCP. The most important things to monitor are 1) the level of the drug in your blood, 2) your kidney function, and 3) your thyroid function.
