The good news is that war vets are treated so much better nowadays than they were back in the Vietnam era. Vietnam vets were scorned by much of society and were really screwed when it came to government benefits, employment upon returning to civilian life, etc. In the '90's - 30 years after their service - Viet vets finally began to receive a little bit of recognition from the government in terms of healthcare, disability benefits, and so on. Now Viet vets have so many more advantages, and that has opened the door for war vets of subsequent wars. While the situation is far from perfect, it is much improved.
