I use to get depressed and feel so ashamed because I'd totally foul up my checking account and have to literally changed banks to get straight again. But then I took professional aptitude testing
http://www.jocrf.org/ and found I didn't have a "clerical" aptitude (nothing to do with typing or filing :-) and needed to buy a calculator (this was the 1970s when they were just coming out and were still a bit expensive) and work harder at balancing my checkbook, that it had nothing to do with my education or what I thought I should be able to do. That was so freeing for me! It wasn't "my" fault and there were things I could do to help myself. I immediately stopped changing banks and made myself work on financial tangles until I untangled them, it was easier since I'd decided it was just a hard problem, not something indicative of my character :-)
