I truly, truly dislike the phrase "what do you have to be depressed about"

Depression is not sadness. Sadness is a normal reaction to an unfortunate event; depression is a mental illness and does not need to be about anything - it simply IS

Also, mental illness is not a sign of weakness of character. We are, in the end, bags of chemicals with memories and, if those chemicals are not quite right, neither are we

Period. Hard stop. End of flippin' story.

You are not depressed about something, you are depressed. If I have to say it 1,000,000 times, depression is not just feeling a little blue. Would they tell you to just go for a jog if you had tendonitis? How about just tell you to cut back on some sweets with diabetes or just drink a glass of milk to calm your stomach if you have acid reflux? No, they would tell you to seek or take you to seek medical assistance
