Just want to say about your first paragraph, what happens to us as children tends to have a huge effect whether it seems in adult eyes to be less so, to a child it would be huge. I hope you get to talk through this one with a therapist sometime.
As for your question, you are aware that this is a trigger but if you don't watch it then that 'story' will not be resolved and you'll be left thinking up all sorts of your own endings. I think, if you can make sure you are well- grounded in the 'here and now,' that is to say - make sure you are totally aware that this is a story you are watching on TV, yes. Make yourself comfortable with company and leave the room and make a cup of coffee or tea etc if you feel uneasy. Then you can discuss the 'story' you watched with your son.
