I did that last year. Left a man I've been with for over 8 years. I left when I realized I didn't like who I become, and my life wasn't and will never be the way I wanted. The way I went about it I literally told myself DO IT. Walked in the room and said I have to tell you something: "it isn't working for me and I am completely done. I want to remain amicable through this, I will be out in about 30 days." (We lived in his house).
There was other stuff after that such as him begging, then he had a heart attack (not kidding), then he pursued me for another 6 months after I left etc it was tough. One of the hardest parts was that we were very involved in each other families, each other kids lives etc if it was just us it would be easier.
I am very happy that I left but pain remains. We loved each other and we had so many wonderful memories that we both struggle with it...
I think when you make up your mind just take a deep breath and go do it, then deal with aftermath. Good luck to you and hugs
