Even if you don't have those specific issues, chronic stress from depression is known to be bad for your brain and I certainly feel that myself. I think that means that becoming un-depressed is also a great way to improve your brain as well. In my experience, also, my brain is very like a muscle in the sense that if I don't keep using it intensively, it gets flabby without me particularly noticing it. Also, if I do manage to concentrate and learn or create something new, that always is a big boost for my mood. Brain training software is another interesting possiblity for this. I haven't tried it myself, but someone on this site found that it was a huge help with their depression.
