I've struggled with insomnia & erratic sleep for over 20 years (big sigh). I also have some pretty wicked PTSD nightmares-when I'm depressed I go through periods like you describe-can't get up just lay there doze off sleep more then I am just crabby irritable & down on myself. It sucks bleh-I take ambien prn a couple of nights a week now so I can get some consistent rest-the other nights sometimes I take melatonin or Benadryl. I am also staying up about 2 hours later than I did so I don't wake up at 5am & that seems to be helping. Saw my pdoc this week & am trying Buspar to help with my anxiety & hopefully once I get used to it help with the PTSD crap. If that doesn't work well I am going to try Prazosin as that is what it is intended for-Doing Ok so far & last night I slept pretty well with just the melatonin/Benadryl. Hope knowing you're not alone dealing with these things makes you feel better.
