My preference would be to see a psychiatrist rather than a GP.

By definition, GPs are generalists - many of them have limited experience and training in working with clients who have mental health issues.

In Australia there is a not-for-profit Web site which is searchable for GPs who do have documented relevant experience and training.

I don't know if that applies to you but it is an option that is worth checking out.
