What you describe does sound very much like bipolar disorder. I would definitely ask to be evaluated. So no, it doesn't AT ALL sound like you are wasting anyone's time.

I get the "I don't know" answers to questions. "I don't know" used to be my default answer because I was so out of touch with my own thinking. My T very quickly stopped allowing that answer most of the time. He worked with me to explore whatever was going through my mind in association to whatever the question was, and I realized that I actually did at least have some inkling, some emotion, some association, something there that I could access and discuss. Over time, I got much better at accessing my own thinking and feelings, but it took a therapist who knew why I was struggling with answers and who knew how to help me access that part of my brain that was so closed off (probably as a protection).
