NOS means "not otherwise specified". It can mean that you don't have symptoms that line up neatly for a dx of either "BP I" or "BP II", yet there's clearly bipolar symptoms and enough of them with enough of an impact on functioning to dx BP. Sometimes it's a temporary dx -- the person diagnosing may feel that they're dealing with bipolar, but want to get to know more about a particular case before deciding if it best falls under BP I or BP II.)
