Yeah but didnt she "start it" by saying, "im using words you can understand". That sounds a little hostile to me, so maybe he is smiling instead of saying, "isnt that a little hostile? What makes you think i cant understand you?" Her retreat into a childlike whine for "what?" shows an abdication of responsibility - this is a tactic i often employ. Mian, sorry for the 3rd person.
