hmmm I've shared about valerian for years

It usually comes in small doses, too small to help with real insomnia, but great for mild anxiety issues. Larger doses such as 530mg of valerian root, where taking 3 tablets is a "dose" is common for real sleep help, imo. It works on the nervous system. Be sure to try anything new while you're at home until you know how it will affect you.
A combination of valerian, passion flower, and hops is probably the best combination for sleep. It helps to also have a routine prior to going to bed, such as shutting off the tv 30 minutes ahead, taking a calming bath, making a list of things for the next day (to clear your mind) etc.
