It is very recent. When I left work an hour and a half ago, I hadn't heard about it, but now at least fifty different people in my Facebook feed have posted the news, or changed their profile pictures to Spock.
I was perhaps too old (25 or so) when I first saw ST to become a huge fan, but Spock is/was an ideal person.
