I don't understand it at all. I would imagine is has something to do with their ego and wanting to see their youthfulness reflected on them. I also think it might be their way of feeling more successful, rich, or powerful because hanging huge self-portraits was something rich and noble households did in the past. Either way, the fad died out for a reason - it's freaking weird to do it.
