I keep coming back to this thread trying to figure out what I want to say. I'm just going to jump in.
I give hugs in the "real" world. Been told I give "good hugs", BUT I respect that there are some folks who do not want to be touched/hugged. Here in the virtual world there's no body language to read to know if someone is open to being hugged. It complicates things. I would certainly never hug someone who stated they did not want to be hugged. That is as rude in the virtual world as it would be in 3D. But how are we supposed to know that? As others have pointed out, I some times use the hug button when I either am not in a place myself to type out a reply or just can't find the words to offer support.
Personally, I like getting hugs. I live alone and rarely receive hugs in the "real" world. I appreciate them here. BUT that's me. I realize that others might feel the same way.
