hi cherokeedove
natural disasters certainly qualify as unnatural events that could trigger ptsd because you are in a position where you fear your life is in danger. there are many factors that lead to ptsd and no two people are going to react the same. some people get it and some people dont. it depends on their makeup and support systems, resources during and after the event, a whole number of factors. two people growing up in the same dysfuntional family, on may get it and one not. you just never know. so seeking out counseling if you think you have it would be the most appropriate thing to do. i lived in oklahoma for a year when i was around 8 or 9. we were hiding out in our closets when the tornados were coming. my dad told me to go shut off the tv. both front and back doors were open and i had to pass them to get to the tv. i still remember the terror i felt of believing the tornado was going to come and suck me away. wondering why my dad was willing to sacrifice me. it is scary stuff. welcome to psych central. you will find we have several forums where you can post about your concerns and receive feedback from other members. you will get a lot of support here. again, welcome
