Yes, it used to be called multiple personalities. There's a lot of variations and degrees of it, but some people share a co-consciousness with an alter. So they are aware of what is going on, but they have wide mood swings, easily distracted, derealization, memory gaps....so on.

You can understand how someone could misdiagnose it as bipolar.
