Well, the original tribe wasn't human, but a human ancestor. Evolutionary change happens incrementally. Human ancestors had to be faced with existential challenges, for want of a better word, to develop large, problem solving, tool using brains. We would not have become the thinking, feeling animals that we are if survival hadn't depended on it.
