The last time I was in the hospital my doctor told me that he often gives someone a diagnosis depending on how long they need to be in the hospital because insurance companies allot a certain number of days to each diagnosis. My primary diagnosis was major depression, so my insurance company allowed 7 days in the hospital. If I had needed more, my doctor would have changed the diagnosis to bipolar disorder nos. I guess that pdocs sometimes have to "play" with the codes to be able to give us appropriate care.
